Roll the Union On
About the Song
This song is attributed to John L. Handcox, an African American singer-songwriter and organizer for the Southern Tenants Union - and to Lee Hays, a member (with Pete Seeger) of the Almanac Singers and later the Weavers.
It is on the classic 1941 Almanac Singers "Talking Union" album. This is the second recording that Pete Seeger ever sang on - and the first recording that is now easily available on CD.
The song is a terrific example of a "zipper song" where all the words but one are repeated from verse to verse. This makes it ideal for getting a group singing on the picket line or at a rally where people don't have access to lyrics.
Make up your own words to zip in that fit the struggle you're involved in - e.g. "If Trump gets in the way we're gonna roll right over him..." Or "Mitch", "Big Oil", "ICE", or the name of a company you are involved in a strike with.
